The Journey of the First Generation of O&H Danish Bakery
Wednesday, August 21, 2024
Step back in time with us to the fabulous 1950s, where rock n’ roll was born, TV shows like I Love Lucy and Leave It to Beaver ruled the airwaves, and folks used colorful slang like “ankle-biter” for a small child and “dreamboat” for a good-looking guy. Righto, let’s dive in!
Anton Olesen’s Journey to America
Imagine uprooting your life, leaving behind everything familiar, and embarking on a transatlantic voyage to America in search of better opportunities for yourself and your family. This is precisely what Anton Olesen did, setting forth on a path that would eventually lead to the creation of O&H Danish Bakery. Driven by the promise of a better life, many Danish immigrants set sail for America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among these brave souls was Anton Olesen. Life in Denmark was fraught with challenges, and the prospect of new opportunities in America was hard to resist. For Anton, the decision to leave Denmark wasn’t just about seeking personal prosperity; it was about securing a future for his family.
Upon arriving in Racine, Wisconsin, Anton faced numerous hardships. Widowed and responsible for six children, the stakes were incredibly high. Anton worked tirelessly, often taking on menial jobs just to make ends meet. His end goal was to save up enough funds to bring his children to America, thus reuniting the family. After two grueling years of hard work and sacrifice, Anton achieved his goal. This reunion marked the beginning of their American dream.
With his family finally together, Anton instilled the values of hard work and perseverance in his children. These values would eventually serve as the bedrock upon which O&H Danish Bakery was built. Anton’s story is one of resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to family—qualities that would be passed down to future generations.
Christian Olesen - The Baker’s Apprentice Turned Master
Anton’s son, Christian Olesen, was particularly influenced by his father’s work ethic and determination. While still young, Christian found work in a local bakery, a job that would unknowingly set the stage for his future endeavors. The bakery was not just a place of employment for Christian; it was a classroom where he would learn the intricacies of baking, a craft that requires both skill and passion.
Christian dedicated 25 years to mastering the art of baking. He learned everything from dough preparation to the delicate balance of flavors that make Danish pastries so unique. His years of hard work culminated in a level of expertise that set him apart from his peers. But Christian wasn’t content with just being a master baker; he had dreams of his own.
In 1949, Christian took the leap and opened O&H Danish Bakery. This wasn’t just the fulfillment of a personal dream; it was the realization of a family legacy that began with Anton’s arduous journey to America. The bakery quickly became known for its authentic Danish pastries, drawing customers from far and wide. Christian’s dedication to quality and authenticity laid the foundation for what would become an enduring family business.
The Fabulous 50s
The Fabulous 1950s. As our bakery was founded in 1949, the 1950s became the time when the bakery started to have it made in the shade. Christian Olesen, the first generation, opened his bakery with a dream to make outstanding Danish pastries and bakery items. Kringles during this time featured traditional flavors and were topped with coarse sugar.
We take the best Mediterranean apricots and create our scratch-made filling, then finish this Kringle with a sprinkling of sugar. When you take your first bite, you’ll flip your lid. The flaky dough, the sweet apricot filling, and the crunchy sugar glaze will have you going steady all the way to Kringleville.
